Ghetto Light Youth

Ghetto Light Youth (GLY), now an educational center, is a non-profit in Nairobi, Kenya that serves the at risk populace of the Kibera slum.  Recognizing the need for opportunity and positive outlets within their community, husband and wife, Abel and Milcah Wafula established GLY in January of 2003.  The organization launched their micro-financing program in March of 2013, to engage in the struggles of local entrepreneurs.   

Ghetto Light Youth's effort to alleviate financial deficit within Kibera, is overseen by a board of directors with expertise in business and finance.  This team partners financial access with business development services to help grow enterprises from the start up level to a sustainable standing. 

Financial literacy for potential borrowers is of utmost priority.  GLY requires its applicants to attend training on the fundamentals of finance management.  The individual must be able to show proof of their gained knowledge, and provide tracking of their saving efforts before they can take on a loan.  

Throughout the transaction, mentorship is provided to the debtor to ensure their business is positively developing.  The utilization of job training and skill advancement are measures GLY employs to secure their benefactor's businesses remain in good standing.  

Within this first year, Ghetto Light Youth has progressed the businesses of 60 individuals who live in Kibera.
